In 1979, following a devastating fire that destroyed much of the east side of the Fayetteville Public Square, Jim Cashion undertook a comprehensive photographic documentation of the district as part of his fifth-year thesis at the University of Tennessee School of Architecture. This project was twofold: it proposed a hypothetical design for the fire-ravaged area while simultaneously conducting an in-depth architectural historical study of the remaining buildings. The images in this collection represent the visual research from that project, preserving a snapshot of the square’s architectural character.
